It makes Rhapsody seem as dumb as... a major record label. Not only was Yotta a great front-end to a giant music library, it was also a pioneer on building atop Amazon web services (S3, EC2, SimpleDB). I am sure whatever Luke does next will be great. Bijan - you are right, Luke did not really use Rhapsody's public web services. He reverse-engineered the player engine. I am surprised this has happened since he originally had their blessing. Seems like it would have been a better idea to buy Yotta then to shut it down.

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

Another example of a company integrating with Rhapsody with a separate player is TiVo.

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

Rhapsody has a page on their site for developers.

Judging from the examples they list it seems they are okay if you use their metadata on your own site but they want you to use their player. This is only my guess based on their examples and description.

But why yottamusic is different than Sonos is unclear to me.

I'm sad.

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

I'm wondering what specific features of the YottaMusic site Rhapsody felt threatened by. Rhapsody was on the right track when they released API's to access they're catalog and now they appear to be taking a huge step back when they shut down a site that successfully built a service around their API's. What kind of example does this set for other developers who want to build services around Rhapsody?

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

I know. I went to the site today again put of habbit. This sucks.

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

YottaMusic was the reason I signed for Rhapsody (and I am sure I wasn't the only one). It made Rhapsody more useful to me. Rhapsody has decreased their own utility by their request. Not smart.
