BijanBlog: New turntable brings back old memories

  • Brian Hayes · 11 months ago
If you can find it I bet Arcade Fire would sound amazing.
  • ajit · 11 months ago
I highly recommend (and still own) Joshua Tree on vinyl. Edge's delay sounds pretty amazing on a turntable - preferably turned up REAL loud.
  • bijan · 11 months ago
Ooh. That's a great call. Thanks.
  • hybernaut · 11 months ago
Excellent call, Ajit. The Unforgettable Fire has that incredible soundstage from recording in the big stone castle. It feels amazing.

    Also, Brian Eno.

    M. Ward's previous few records are *incredible* on vinyl. Jens Lekman is really, really meant for the superior format as well.

And you should also get a copy of Guided By Voices "Bee Thousand" on vinyl as well. It's required listening for sure.

    Raj.

    Those are fantastic suggestions.
    Thx.

    Hmmm...tough to pick...

Velvet Underground & Nico (in part so that you get that album jacket as god intended it)
U2, War (though I'm not sure it's been reissued on vinyl and you can't have my copy :) )

Not sure whether they're to your taste, but both Minor Threat's eponymous LP and Fugazi's Repeater would be on my list.

And to close on a completely different note, I'd also go for Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper, and Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home.

On a tangent, I'm not limiting to "classic" albums but after the last 18 months or so I've returned to my mp3-only policy as a starting point: I only buy mp3s, but then pick up the vinyl later on for the stuff that I really love. I ended up going that route after listening to some 70+ year old 78s and realizing that wax seems to have the best odds of being playable for my grandkids. :)
  • bijan · 11 months ago
I used to own that minor threat record. That's a classic.
  • daryn · 11 months ago
A few labels have free MP3 downloads when you buy the vinyl, the best of both worlds!

Congrats on the turntable, Bijan. One of my favorite things on vinyl is Christmas music, for that extra bit of nostalgia. Also, Simon & Garfunkel :)

I have a 1971 Triumph TR-6, it's kind of the same idea, you open the hood and you know how everything works. Old school is kind of fun.
  • Mike Coop · 11 months ago
Dark Side of the Moon. Since it seems to be the first CD so many people purchased, it's only appropriate that it be among the first LPs you pick up.
  • hybernaut · 11 months ago
Thanks for sharing the moment with us, Bijan--it's inspirational.

How do you feel about the scratchy sound of vinyl after all these years on digital?
  • bijan · 11 months ago
    Not scratchy really

Its more like smooth. Don't know how else to explain it.
  • David · 11 months ago
I think Curtis Mayfield: Superfly should definitely be on the list. Sly Stone's Fresh is also good. Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, Rolling Stones: Aftermath would also be great. That's my call
  • ajit · 11 months ago
I would also add Mute Math's debut album, 'Mute Math'. Hopefully with these recommendations your collection will start looking like this: http://bitly.com/Gysh
  • Mo Koyfman · 11 months ago
you're old ;) i've always found the rolling stones - stripped to be one of the best vinyl albums of all time. nothing like mick, in his prime, acoustic, on vinyl. sickness.
  • gbattle · 11 months ago
Get friendly with the President: http://bit.ly/ctMC

James Brown "Live At The Apollo" - tightest band ever, incredible tempo changes, James at his best (and it shouldn't cost you much to get).

Honestly, *every* Blue Note record from the 60s will sound awesome (specifically, the Rudy Van Gelder recorded stuff). Too many to name, but RVG's studios had *that* sound.

Head over to DustyGroove.com and you can pick up tons of great stuff, including a HUGE number of 45's (hint, they sound better!).
  • bijan · 11 months ago
    Great suggestions. Thanks!

OH WAIT! Mo's post reminded me.

Get the ORIGINAL Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers" LP, the one with the actual zipper on the cover.

Stones are SO good on vinyl.
  • Facebook User · 11 months ago
Get some Sesame Street vinyl for your kids. They'll love it.
  • bijan · 11 months ago
They have already taken over the Sonos so I was thinking that the record player would be in my little sanctuary!

but I think you are right :)
  • Facebook User · 11 months ago
I'm going to loan you some records that you wouldn't otherwise buy, but that you must hear. I'll leave then in a bag for at the front desk in a few days.

Maybe we should setup a Boston vinyl record swap. What do you think?
  • bijan · 11 months ago
If you are coming over then let's meet for coffee or something

I'm all over the swap idea although I first need to build up my collection so I can give too.

I actually have not heard these on vinyl, but think they would definitely kick - on the Blue Note tip:
    - Grant Green - Feelin' the Spirit (with a young unknown pianist named Herbie Hancock)
    - Wes Montgomery - Smokin' at the Half Note...

I'm not home, will have to check out my collection...and find a turntable to buy finally. I like the sanctuary idea too. I'm hooked.

i have a rule that every time i set up a new audio system, be it a turntable, a cd player, or something like sonos, i always start with Exile On Main Street. i've never broken that rule and it's always served me well. though Quadrophenia is an excellent choice. i've got a lot of memories with that record too
  • fredwilson · 11 months ago
hmm, i just left a comment and don't see it now.

anyway, i always start with Exile On Main Street, always have and always will no matter if its a new turntable, new cd player, new system, sonos, ipod, whatever

but quadrophenia is equally awesome and a great choice
  • bijan · 11 months ago
I am so getting exile on main street.
